Stone Steps

I am partial to stone steps in a garden for the possibilities their presence brings. A series of steps allows for greater access and viewing garden beds from different levels. Often steps are used to connect a series of terraced stone walls thus integrating their features. Depending on the setting, steps can be formal or casual, mortared or dry laid. I prefer large, single slabs of stone for dry laid steps, attractive on their own they have a very natural look when set in a series. In addition, beautiful boulder stones are often placed at intervals alongside the steps complimenting the horizontal surfaces while creating dynamic planting areas.
